thanks – I knew most of this but it’s good to be reminded and have it all laid out sensibly.
As Angelo says if you are lucky there is a damsel dry opportunity, hit right it’s marvellous.
Glad to hear the experts also find the warmwater windows are very small indeed, I’ve been very frustrated trying to find the pike window, miss it every year.. came to the conclusion I should be fishing every week from mid-April until June, then take an immediate week’s leave if I ever actually hit the window ;-)
I’ve been Stillwater fishing for 30 years and I still learned a thing or two. I would point out that May and June can be be some of the best days fishing damsel fly nymphs inches below the surface a damsel drys. The takes on the dries are savage. June is also a great time, on the right lake, for Callibaetis hatch’s as well, some of the dry fly days I’ve ever had have been on callibaetis. You’ll probably rack up more 24” fish at ice off but June on light tackle can be super as well. You used to carry one of the best crippled calli flies, it had some foam at the head, absolute killer.
