Umpqua / Charlie's Fly Box Interviews and Fly Tying Videos

Sam Wright has been in the outdoor industry for 16 years and worked as a guide before finding his place at Charlie's Fly box. While Sam is a father & a husband he finds the time to throughly think out the design of a new fly he is creating. With this came the Wild Lady, a beautifully crafted streamer that is small enough to cast on a 5 weight yet quickly dives deep thanks to its sparse design. Sam and his pleasantly friendly demeanor are a welcome edition to the Umpqua Signature Tyer Family.

Umpqua Signature Tyer Sam Wright developed the Wild Lady to be his go-to streamer for any situation he would encounter on a given day in Colorado. A streamer that is easy to cast, sinks quickly and is versatile enough for any condition.

Charlie Craven best describes Max as, "Having unbridled enthusiasm". Max has an immense passion for fly tying and fly fishing. With this passion came the creation of Max's Mess Maker. A durable and versatile Caddis pattern that you can skate, flutter and dance through pockets and seams with confidence, knowing the fly will be sure to attract any fish that hold below. We are excited to have Max become a part of the Umpqua Signature Tyer family and can't wait to see what's next.

Umpqua Signature Tyer Max Beauchene set out to make a caddis pattern that is highly buoyant but with a body that still pierces the surface film. The flash under the dubbing rib creates a subtle glow and the forward facing wing allows the fly to skate and makes it difficult to sink in complex pocket water.

It's quite the high praise when Charlie Craven describes you as being, "The single most talented young fly tyer I've ever met". Jaren Hernandez, at just the age if 19, has reinvented what it means to have a "weedless" fly pattern. Jaren's Special Sock is a truly unique fly that we have added to the Umpqua catalog and we are thrilled to see what he comes up with next.

Umpqua Signature Tyer Jaren Hernandez designed the Special Sock in a unique way, allowing the body of the fly to be used as the weed guard, keeping the hook point out of the nasty stuff. The perfect streamer to swim through structure and weeds while you're searching for that big eat.
